Oudtshoorn - the ostrich capital
The Little (or Klein) Karoo is a region bordered in the south by the Outeniqua and Langeberg Ranges, and in the north by the Swartberg Range about 60 km away. It runs east from Ontagu for about 300 km to Uniondale, and is more fertile and better watered than the harsher Great Karoo to the north.
More people are discovering this region through the promotion of Route 62, a hinterland drive between Cape Town and the Garden Route.
Progressing from the Breede River Valley through such interesting places as the hot-spring town of Montagu and the ostrich-breeding centre of Oudtshoorn, not to mention lovely scenery, Route 62 is well worth considering as an alternative to the N2 highway. To get to the coast there are spectacular kloofs and passes that cut through the mountains.
Oudtshoorn
They are ostrich crazy in Oudtshoorn - the sedate tourist capital of the Little Karoo - and for good reason. The surrounding farmlands are thick with these birds which have been bred hereabouts since the 1870s. You can buy ostrich eggs, feathers and biltong all over town, not to mention ride the birds at several show farms.
Oudtshoorn is also well situated as a base for exploring the different environments of the Little Karoo, the Garden Route and the Great Karoo. The nearby Swartberg and Seweweekspoort Passes - two of South Africa's scenic highlights - are geological, floral and engineering masterpieces.
Another major tourist attraction are the impressive Cango Caves which are just outside of Oudtshoorn and can be visited on different tours.
Montagu
Montagu is populated by artists and other escapees, and there's a peaceful old-world atmosphere. There are some 24 restored national monuments, but what is increasingly attracting more people is Montagu's splendid range of adventure sports activities, including mountain biking, hiking and world-class rock climbing.
Another attraction are the Hot Springs. Water from the hot mineral springs finds its way into the concrete pools at the Avalon Springs Hotel, about 3 km from town. Heated at 43 C and renowned for their healing properties, the pools are popular amongst the locals.
