Wheelchair friendly African holiday
A short while ago I had a client from overseas who is in a wheelchair. I was organizing a holiday in South Africa for her and and her friends.
It proved to be a challenge. I noticed then how little information is available about wheelchair friendly accommodation and that establishments which do cater for disabled travelers are not easy to find, especially in more rural areas - I made it my goal to do more research in order to be able to offer a relaxing, wheelchair friendly holiday in South Africa.
My wheelchair friendly accommodation list now comprises establishments in all price categories, guest houses, B&B's, hotels and safari lodges. Game reserves need to be evaluated very carefully as not all of them can offer their safari activities to their disabled guests.
The details have to be right
For wheelchair access, entrance or side doors need to be ramped or level. Interior doors also need to have a certain minimum width, with no steps leading into public rooms (restaurant, lounge, bar, toilets, etc.). There are many disabled people who do not use wheelchairs, but are unable to use steps or stairs.
Bathroom facilities have to be adequate, as well. The door should be at least 80cm wide; enough room is needed to enter in a wheelchair and close the door, with space beside the WC for a wheelchair to enable sideways transfer; support rails near the bath and WC are also needed.
Outside areas of wheelchair friendly accommodation: There should be a route without steps and with a firm smooth surface which wheelchairs can use; this would ideally facilitate access to the swimming pool or beach without needing to negotiate steps; the availability or otherwise of a swimming-pool hoist should be indicated; the accommodation should be in a central position with shopping and entertainment facilities within easy reach, otherwise specially-arranged transport would be needed to enable disabled holidaymakers to go on trips or excursions.
Holidays for disabled clients have to be organized very carefully and require a lot of preparation work. I am happy to assist anybody with disabilities to ensure that they can enjoy a relaxing and stress-free vacation in South Africa.
